Clean Air Day – Clean Up Your Mind

Clean Air Day Ecozone

Clean up our air to look after your mind this #CleanAirDay.

Every year Global Action hold UK’s largest campaign on air pollution, Clean Air Day, to raise awareness and fuel the Clean Air movement.

Cleaning up our air is essential. It not only benefits our personal and physical health, but it can improve the environment and also protect our mental and brain health. The physical impact air pollution has on us is very real and is known to cause – asthma, heart disease, cancer and more. Global Action explains, “More recently, researchers are beginning to understand how air pollution can affect the brain and the mind“, hence this year’s Clean Air Day topic: Clean up our air to look after your mind.

We often think of air pollution concerning the outdoors, transport, and the fumes factories emit. While this is true, did you know that the products we use in our homes also contribute to the issue and cause bad air quality indoors?

Here are some tips to help you look after your mind and reduce air pollution in your home.

1. Clean green

Aim to use more conscious and greener cleaning products at home. Many mainstream brands contain an abundance of harsh chemicals. Although they appear to ‘do the job’, they let off many toxic airborne particles into the home. Using greener products could help to improve air quality and lessen your exposure to harsh chemicals.

2. Mindful cleaning

We often go overboard when cleaning. Dowsing surfaces with product to get the job done quickly. But by doing so, you’ll probably find you’re using more solution than needed, and it likely will make little of a difference to the result. Taking your time to choose products carefully for the actual need state, and doing a little cleaning often, could help to reduce the need for using so much, and will also most likely take better care of your surfaces and items at home.

3. Don’t mix

Did you know that most cleaning chemicals can’t be used together? As explained above, mixing chemicals can create and give off highly toxic compounds and gasses.

4. Air purifiers

Not every air purifier will work to remove VOCs, gases or household chemicals, but there are some with specific filters that can help to reduce such compounds. Do plenty of research before purchasing, but using one at home could help improve indoor air quality and pollution.
