Ecozone products are septic tank safe! What does that mean?

Septic Tank Safe Cleaning

You might have noticed that all Ecozone products are Septic Tank Safe. Unless you have a septic tank, or maybe even if you do, you might be wondering what that means. And what makes Ecozone products septic tank safe?

What is a septic tank?

Firstly, let’s define what a septic tank is. A septic tank, or septic system, is a drainage system used in the UK as an alternative to sewage piping. Septic tanks mostly found in country homes, so it may not be familiar to you if you live in a city.Septic tanks use bacteria and enzymes that separate waste from water, which then travels into specially designed perforated pipes that release the water into a drain field. The drain field, which is essentially a patch of soil, consists of layers of rocks that clean the water by filtering it before it flows back into the water systems.

What damage can cleaning products cause a septic tank?

Products with large amounts of toxins can damage not only to the septic tank system but also the environment. Formulas that contain too many harsh chemicals kill the bacteria in the septic tank that’s essential to the separation of waste, but also end up in the surrounding ecosystems and poison nearby waterways.

While most cleaning products are generally safe to use with septic systems in small amounts, it is best to opt for products that are labelled septic safe. Ecozone’s septic tank safe cleaning means you can use our products without worrying about damaging your septic system.

Plant-based and natural ingredients

Formulas like Ecozone’s, with plant-based ingredients and only inconspicuous amounts of chemical ingredients, ensure no toxins are damaging the essential bacteria in your septic tank, nor are they being filtered back into the natural water systems. Septic tank systems do not filter chemicals and toxins, so its important to avoid them as much as possible.

Biodegradable ingredients

As many of our ingredients are plant-based, they are also naturally biodegradable. While synthetic chemicals might build up because they don’t break down, biodegradable ingredients will decompose naturally without causing any environmental damage.

What products can I use with a septic tank?

Antibacterial cleaners and disinfectants are usually not necessary for most home cleaning, and the strong chemicals found in most of these products will kill the bacteria your septic tank needs to work. Instead, try Ecozone’s range of cleaners, all of which are septic tank safe. Our Multi-Surface Cleaner is anti-bacterial and kills 99.9% of bacteria, without damaging the septic system.

Chlorine bleach can kill bacteria in your septic tank if too much is used, but it’s also harmful to aquatic life. To protect both the wildlife and your septic tanks we never use chlorine bleach in any of our products (look out for the aquatic life labels on our products, too!). Our Pure Oxygen Power Brightening and Power Whitening Tablets are just as effective as chlorine bleach cleaners, but without the chlorine bleach, so you can use them with confidence that they’re not causing damage to your septic tank or wildlife.

Chemical drain cleaners, while incredibly powerful, are also harmful to your septic tanks because of the chemicals used. Like any other products being washed through your pipes and back into the water systems, it can also have a negative effect of aquatic life as well as damaging your septic tanks. For a year’s worth of maintenance, try Ecozone’s Enzymatic Drain Cleaning Sticks, that protect your drains from clogs and bad smells by breaking down organic matter with natural bacteria and enzymes. Our Kitchen Drain Unblocker and Plughole Hair Unblocker are also septic tank safe solutions with enzymatic formulas that are non-toxic and non-corrosive.
