How to Adopt a More Minimalist Lifestyle for National Organising Week

Minimalism and minimalist living have become an increasingly popular lifestyle choice in recent years. Since the release of Tidying Up with Marie Kondo on Netflix in 2017 and inspiring us to only keep items that “spark joy,” many have slowly started to reject consumption and instead limit the clutter in our homes and focus on a more minimal approach to life.

What is minimalism?

There are many definitions and understanding of what minimalism really is. Caleb Backe, a health and wellness expert, says that minimalism is about focusing “on what really matters. For some, this means eliminating the ‘stuff’ that doesn’t make you happy.”

As such, minimalism often starts with decluttering and organising in order to achieve a more simple lifestyle and space.

Why is a minimal lifestyle beneficial?

Easier cleaning: less stuff means less to clean, less to organise, and less stuff that will end up making a mess! This will also save you time to do other things that you enjoy

Less spending: with more focus on owning items that are meaningful, you’ll spend less time shopping and make more careful purchases. This will help save money for other things that matter to you – or just for a rainy day

Great for the planet: Buying less and reducing your personal consumption is a much more sustainable option than consuming our planets resources. A minimalist lifestyle is a sustainable lifestyle, because you’re making a conscious effort to consume less and more intentionally

Tips to adopt a more minimalist lifestyle

  1. Shop less! Go for quality over quantity, which will mean you’re making more meaningful purposes and being smarter with your money
  2. Cut down on what you don’t need. Is there anything you haven’t picked up in a while and could probably do without? Any clothes that you haven’t worn in more than a few months? Get rid of anything that isn’t serving any purpose right now
  3. Opt for reusable products. Try taking a reusable coffee cup with you when you get a takeaway coffee, or maybe an Ecozone Ecoball instead of laundry detergent, that will help cut down on your waste and repeat purchases!
  4. Consider Project 333. Focusing on your fashion consumption, try Project 333, which involves limiting yourself to 33 items (including accessories and shoes) for 3 months, and you might find that you don’t miss or need any more or support more companies that have good intentions when it comes to sustainable design & concepts such as @lonedesignclub https://lonedesignclub.com/pages/we-are-on-a-mission
  5. Have a place for everything. Having somewhere for all your items to go makes it easier to organise and tidy when you’re done using them, which will probably save you future clean-ups on a large scale
